Clos Du Val Vineyards is a recognizable name for sure, with a history dating back before the original Paris tasting, in fact their initial Cabernet vintage was included as one of the 6 American wines for that very tasting. They finished 8th of the 10 Cabernet’s considered during the tasting, but the results should be taken as a giant win in and of itself, just for being included in their initial vintage is a testament to what was to come later in terms of quality.
Opened by John Goelet and French winemaker Bernard Portet (of the Chateau Lafite family) Clos Du Val Vineyards started with a Stag’s Leap District property and then quickly added more acreage in Carneros. These are undoubtably, some of the most European wines being made in the Valley today, higher acidity and more restraint are common across vintages. Those attributes, don’t always lead to incredibly high critics scores here in America, but the wine is one to watch, especially if you’re willing to drop a high end offering in your cellar.
For us at Uncorked Ventures, sadly the winery is simply too well established and too well known to be included in any of our wine of the month clubs.
