Yorkville Cellars is located at the southernmost end of Mendocino County, in the Yorkville Highlands AVA. It’s an interesting spot largely because that’s the section of Mendocino County that’s closest to Sonoma, meaning that it’s a more expensive area than most of the rest of Mendocino. Proximity in this case, breeds price increases.
That closeness to what we generally all think of as Sonoma also means that the weather is warmer. When we typically think of Mendocino, we’re thinking it is cold like Burgundy. This part of Mendocino County though, is closer to Bordeaux in average temperature than the rest of France though.
Yorkville Cellars itself has been organically farmed since 1986 and they ask an interesting question especially in regard to the sparkling wine that they produce-what if Bordeaux had invented Champagne?
With multiple bottles priced in the $19-$22 range, they could be a nice fit for our Explorations Wine Club in the future.
