During my first meeting after opening Uncorked Ventures back in 2011, Jean Hoefliger who is the winemaker at Alpha Omega in Napa Valley told me that 98% of wine is consumed within 48 hours of its purchase.
For my Reserve Selections Wine Club, my most premium offering, that poses something of a problem. First and foremost, at this price point I want to deliver wine that is extremely high quality. In the past year I’ve shipped Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year, from Evening Lands Vineyards in Oregon, as well as, a number of other high scoring offerings.
However, I’ve also featured a number of names that aren’t recognizable and didn’t have high scores attached to them. Wineries like Vaughn Duffy, well, to call it a winery may not be entirely accurate as Matt’s a 1 man operation, with a full time winemaking job elsewhere, deliver outstanding wine. The critics generally won’t review wines like this, because his production level is small and he isn’t in many markets. I think my customers appreciated it.
Likewise, we explored Pinot Noir made in California’s Anderson Valley. Anthill Farms, which I’ve shipped in this wine club, has a connection via one of their winemakers to a vineyard source called Comptche Ridge. The vineyard owner has a couple of barrels of wine made every year. It’s a pretty incredible look at what’s being done in one of the coolest growing environments in the country-the wine we shipped topped out at only 47 cases of production.
