Opened by Louis Honig in 1964 on close to 70 acres in Rutherford, the focus from the beginning centered on two grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon which is consistent with the Rutherford address, along with Sauvignon Blanc (notice, they never have focused on Chardonnay).

A nice story in that the winery is now run by the Honig’s grandson, his wife and other family members: that’s an amazing accomplishment and one they should be proud of.

Honig is an interesting case study in what can happen if prices stay under control.  Sauvignon Blanc is price at about $17 for a Napa Valley version and $28 for Rutherford only grapes.  Cabernet Sauvignon runs under $100 a bottle and the Napa Valley version sits at only $45.

Good wine & fair prices: isn’t that a project we want to support in Napa? I haven’t had the chance to try a Sauvignon Blanc of late from Honig Vineyard & Winery, but I’m interested for my wine of the month club.  I like the ownership situation, the prices and of course, the story.  Family ownership is something we all are going to need to support in Napa, if we want it to exist a few decades from now.
