Things are a bit bigger at Fetzer than literally anywhere else in Mendocino County. First, the property was originally an amazing 700+ acres and vintage sizes were already close to three thousand cases per year by the late 1960’s when Napa was still just getting started a bit further southeast.
These days Fetzer is one of the biggest names in the world of California wine-well integrated with this original parcel, as well as Bonterra’s organic operation and another large operation more recently in Paso Robles. Of course, total production is now over four million cases of wine per year in total. The family also finally sold about a decade ago, reportedly receiving a package worth over $100M for the entire winery operation.
If you aren’t familiar with the house style, it’s suppose to be clean and crisp and good for immediate consumption. The winery is now even making wines from some over seas vineyards (France and Germany in most vintages) in their Mendocino County location. At least one million cases, or a quarter of their annual production is exported making Fetzer one of America’s best known wines overseas.
Look, they make everything, almost any varietal you could want and do so at a fair price. We focus on higher priced offerings, even in our cheap wine of the month club option, but Fetzer’s a name to remember before you grab that next bottle of Mondavi at the grocery store.
