Rarely do I read a winery website these days and smile to myself.  Such is the situation with having been through thousands of them over the years, trying to find wineries with whom it might be worth it to take a meeting or two.

Bunchgrass Winery made me smile, with their page about the winery staff.  First. owner and winemaker Tom Olander worked at the Hotel Del Coronado for a number of years and in restaurants in and around San Diego.  Given that’s where I grew up, it was nice to hear.  Also, there’s a sense of humor among the titles….compliance genius and in addition to the winery dogs, a wanna be winery dog.

I appreciate that stuff.  I think consumers do as well.

Lastly, it’s worth a mention that Bunchgrass Winery produces only 800 cases of wine per vintage.  If they had a Napa address, that would mean they’d be charging over $100 per bottle. It’s interesting they’re focused largely on Rhone’s and it helps to explain, a bit I think about why Washington is doing so well as a wine destination: there’s an ability to produce varietals in a wide variety of styles, but also to grow anything from Cabernet Sauvignon to Merlot to Syrah in their climate.

Bunchgrass Winery is on our short list of possible wineries to include in an upcoming wine club shipment.
