Monterey AVA

One of the larger AVA's in the state of California, the Monterey AVA runs approximately 100 miles north to south from the northernmost tip of Monterey and the famous canning industry, Steinbeck novel sites and aquarium finally ending well south at the Paso Robles AVA border.

With 9 smaller AVA's included in the larger Monterey AVA it is difficult to make broad generalizations, but suffice it to say that these are generally speaking cooler weather AVA's than their southern or eastern counterparts. In fact, despite the fog infested coastline habitat most people associate with Monterey, the southern part of the AVA needs to be watered by the Salinas River because of the constant 100 degree heat during the summer.
