Mesilla Valley AVA
Another AVA which is found across multiple states, the Mesilla Valley AVA is primarily based in New Mexico around the town of Las Cruces which sits ajacent to the historic pueblo of Mesilla. Mesilla was made famous by being on the stagecoach route as a central stop between San Antonio and San Diego, while also hosting the final resting place of Billy the Kid and other famous (or infamous) characters from our western past.
An extremely dry and hot region, temperatures often climb well over 100 degrees with only a little abatement at night, this is hardly what the French would consider an ideal grape growing region. Local vintners, of which there are only a few, are experimenting with Italian varietals and a few lesser known international arrivals to attempt to grow grapes in this arid, hot climate.
