Capay Valley AVA
Sitting slightly northeast of Napa, Capay Valley has been thought of for many years as an area which could dramatically increase in quality at any point in the future. In 2002 Capay Valley Vineyards, the largest winery in the AVA led the charge to have the AVA officially recognized. Capay Valley crafts an interesting mix of wines which include Sangiovese (the Italian varietal), Tempranillo (the Spanish varietal), Viognier (the classic Rhone varietal from France) as well as the northern California standout Cabernet Sauvignon. Their ability to craft these four dramatically different types and styles of wine in the Capay Valley AVA goes to show some of the potential in this cooler weather area in northern California.
