Blauer Portugieser

Blauer Portugieser is a wine grape largely found in southern Austria, although many Germans think the grape is native to their country because their academic viticulture institutions often use the grape for teaching as well as for experiments into grape breeding.

More often associated with being easy to grow rather than crafting outstanding wines, Blauer Portugieser creates wine which are often too light to be considered truly world class quality.

Like most grapes from Germany and their cental European neighbors to the east, Blauer Portugieser grows best in cool conditions and therefore isn't a candidate to be brought to many overseas growing regions.
