Ben Lomond Mountain AVA

Truly one of the historic AVA's of California, with plantings spanning at least 150 years going back to the 1850's. Sitting at over 2,500 feet in elevation at the western edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains this is about as difficult as it gets to grow grapes in California. Aside from the elevation, cool temperatures and blustery winds coming off the ocean, the vines are under constant attack by deer and birds because the mountain range sits comfortably above the fog line. At various times only a few wineries bother with the rough growing conditions, but many wineries still believe if mastered Ben Lomond Mountain could produce some of the very best Pinot Noir in the world.
