Certainly one of the more interesting names in the grape world for those of us who are English speaking, but Bastardo deserves mention among some of the most important grapes in the world, despite the average wine drinker having never heard of the grape.

Bastardo has been one of the main grapes used to craft Port wine for centuries.  It is also one of the main still wine (or table wine if you like) grapes in the Dao region of Portugal.  If Port was named after a grape instead of a region, many would be well aware of Bastardo since Port is still largely the dessert wine of choice in the United States and in fact across the world.
