Arroyo Seco AVA

Part of the larger Monterrey County AVA, Arroyo Seco benefits greatly from the cool weather afforded to this coastal part of California. Breezes are very cool in the afternoon when the temperature is at its highest point, so grapes here always are able to keep their acidity. At the same time, gravel is the main soil type which takes in the heat during the day ensuring that the vines do not freeze during the very cool nights (at least for California). Gravel also drains very well, creating what amounts to an ideal environment for growing cool weather varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
