The concept for Uncorked Ventures was formed during a family vacation to South America in early 2009. While sipping on Pisco Sours and wines from Chile and Argentina, two brothers-in-law discussed their passion for good food and good wine. Matt Krause had recently left his human resources position at a San Francisco bay area biotech firm, and Mark Aselstine's real estate development company in San Diego had slowed to a crawl based on the economic downturn. Both desired to do something new that they could dedicate themselves to with passion and enthusiasm.

As the conversation evolved, many different business concepts emerged. Each was met with varying degrees of enthusiasm. And as the days passed, Mark and Matt found themselves returning to their love and appreciation of good wine as the concept that would launch their business. And so, it was decided. They would start a business focused on delivering high quality, hard-to-find wines at a fair price to customers who can't readily access such wines. Less than two months later, Mark and Matt launched Uncorked Ventures in the summer of 2009, building their business around their passion for good wine on the foundation of a tight-knit family and close friendship.
